What this calculator does
A ratio compares parts to each other. A percentage compares each part to the whole. This tool adds up your ratio, divides each part by the total, and multiplies by 100 so you can say things like "60% of the mix is flour".
How to use it
- Enter the ratio, for example 2 : 3 : 5.
- Press Convert.
- See each part as a percentage, with simple bars and the step-by-step working.
The method
For 2 : 3 : 5 the total is 10, so the parts are 2/10 = 20%, 3/10 = 30% and 5/10 = 50%. The percentages always add up to 100%.
Examples you can try
| Ratio | Percentages |
|---|---|
| 1 : 1 | 50% and 50% |
| 1 : 3 | 25% and 75% |
| 2 : 3 | 40% and 60% |
| 2 : 3 : 5 | 20%, 30% and 50% |
| 7 : 3 | 70% and 30% |
Where people use it
- Budgets: a 5 : 3 : 2 split for needs, wants and savings is 50%, 30% and 20%.
- Recipes: how much of the dough is flour by share?
- Surveys: 18 yes to 12 no is 60% yes.
Tips
- Use the whole as the sum of all parts. A ratio of 1 : 3 means the first part is 1 of 4, not 1 of 3.
- If you already have a part and a whole (such as 12 out of 48), the percentage calculator is quicker.
